Soap Molds

People have been using molds to make soaps and candles and many other things for many, many years. Earlier molds were simply large wooden boxes.

Molds are used to make just about everything you see and use, you just never really thought about it. The glass in your hand came from a mold. Parts to your car come from molds. Guess how they make fiberglass boats? They use a huge mold. There really are not too many things that are not made from molds and soaps are no different. Take your favorite store bought brand of bar soap. They are all made from molds.

So what makes a silicone mold so special?

Silicone soap molds have many major advantages to wooden soap molds or the rigid plastic molds that will more than often cut your fingers and hands. Silicone molds are soft and flexible. There are many items that just could not be made from a traditional mold without ugly parting lines. It is easy to use and has a long library life.One soap mold can produce thousands upon thousands of bars of soaps before you would even consider replacing it.

Another great feature of silicone is the fact that nothing will stick to it. There is no need for a mold release when using silicone molds. You can pour soap, resin, wax, plaster, polyester and just about any casting material into a silicone mold and it will not stick. Once the casting material has cured it comes out with minimal effort.

Silicone can also withstand high heats. It is no secret that when making soap the soap in it's liquid form can be scalding hot. Silicone molds are not affected by this heat thus making it a prime candidate for soap making.

Silicone can even capture the finest details. It is so amazing that it can pick up a fingerprint from a piece of clay. This is yet another reason that silicone is superior.

Silicone was first created synthetically in a lab in 1943. Dow Chemical was researching a material that could withstand high heats that electronic motors were producing. It was to be used as an insulator. I bet they never thought that it would be used for creating soaps and candles.

There are many types of silicones on the market today. There are some that are very soft and require support while others are as rigid as the bottom of your shoe. You might even have some kitchen utensils or pans that are made from silicone. Silicone is not going to disappear anytime soon and it makes the ultimate choice for soap molds.
